Can You Hunt With an AR-15?

Thanks to David Codrea of

Can you hunt with an AR-15? The answer might be less interesting than you think. First, let's review the language of the Second Amendment to the US Constitution:
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." - Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
I have read through the Constitution several times now, and I have yet to find the part about hunting. In fact, hunting is heavily regulated (not well regulated) by both the federal government and the states, including licensing requirements & fees, reporting requirements, and restrictions on the type of firearms and accessories which may be used in the harvesting of game animals. There is no constitutionally guaranteed right to hunt animals at the federal level.

So, can you hunt with an AR-15? The answer is irrelevant. Whether you can hunt animals or not with a particular weapon has no bearing on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The standard of what caliber or magazine capacity is needed to humanely harvest a deer or a coyote is not a consideration for the security of a free state.

I will volunteer, however, that I have used my AR-15 to harvest both deer and coyotes, and I have found it to work very well.
